As if dropping consecutive outings weren’t concerning enough, Colorado has conceded 50-plus points in each of its last two defeats. With several question marks surrounding the offense and a defense that can’t get off the field, the Buffaloes have brewed a self-harming cocktail in Boulder.



Now, the Buffaloes are rolling the dice. Through 9 games in the 2025 NCAA season, Colorado ranks among the bottom of every stat in the Big 12.

The Buffs’ defense allows an average of 215.8 rushing yards per game (most in the conference), 426.4 total yards (second-most), and concedes 30.1 points (third-most in the Big 12). Such numbers help paint a clear picture on the situation in Boulder. 



On the offensive side of the ball, the grass isn’t necessarily greener. Colorado averages a total of 329.8 yards on offense per game with only 22 points (second-worst among the conference). Moreover, the attack is disrupted often, as the Buffaloes have allowed 24 sacks against (average of 2.7 sacks per outing)—the second most by any Big 12 program.



Languishing at the bottom of virtually every statistical category, it’s no surprise Colorado is 1-5 against Big 12 opponents. Nor is it surprising that Deion has toggled through his options in the quarterback room, hoping to spark some change within the team.

If there’s one sign of hope for the Buffs, it’s the fact that West Virginia has posted very similar numbers. Both schools are 3-6 overall and 1-5 in league play, with their stats placing them squarely in the basement of the conference standings.



When the Buffaloes and Mountaineers clash at Milan Puskar Stadium, the two sides will be playing to stay alive. The loser will wave its season goodbye, as both need to win out in order to secure bowl eligibility. 



Colorado has yet to win a game away from home in the year, but Sanders and company better hope that hex will end soon. In order to secure a bowl game appearance for the second straight season, the Buffs will have to win twice on the road when facing West Virginia (Nov. 8) and Kansas State (Nov. 29) on the road.

Initially, the incident resulted in a $50,000 fine from the league; however, the punishment has since been lifted.



“The Big 12 informed <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/colorado-buffaloes" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Colorado</a> on Tuesday that it ‘executed its field storm management procedures,’” as stated by BuffZone reporter Brian Howell. “And will not receive a fine for fans rushing the field after Saturday’s 24-17 win against then-No. 22 Iowa State.”



<h2>Price of winning</h2>



As the University of Colorado Boulder did everything on its power to prevent the field-rush, the Big 12 has now decided to rescind the fine for Sanders’ program. Still, Coach Prime had made it clear the school would foot the bill if it had come to that, though it didn’t sit right with them.

It’s been a shaky season so far for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/colorado-buffaloes">Buffaloes</a>, with two wins and three losses placing them well outside the playoff picture. From this point forward, every win is crucial for Colorado.



Coach Prime has proven to be a master motivator, and this time was no exception. In a recent media appearance, Sanders showed great enthusiasm about what he expects from his players heading into their trip to Texas.



“Let’s just say the offense,” the HC said. “Let’s not single anybody out right now. (Pause) Not at a loss for words, just figuring out how to frame it. I want them to play like their life is on the line, like their careers are on the line, like the payment for a car is on the line, the payment for a home is on the line, like have children depending on them; some do. I just want them to play with full intensity and passion.

“And when you walk off that field, I want you to look back and say, ‘I gave it my all.’ That is all any coach wants. That is all I desire. I don’t want you saying, ‘I wish I coulda, shoulda.’ I want you to be able to look back over your shoulder. I asked them this morning in the meeting… just a simple question. It is only one answer or the other. Are you underachieving or overachieving? That’s it.”

“At halftime, we challenged certain positions to go out there and up their game, challenge their opponents. We didn’t get that. We got the same thing that we had in the first half.”

The Buffaloes jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter but failed to close, dropping to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 play. “We had opportunities, a tremendous amount of opportunities, but nevertheless, we didn’t cash in on it,” Sanders said.



The head coach pointed directly at execution as the biggest problem. “Sometimes it felt like the moment was just too big for some of our athletes and they’ve got to do something about that,” he told reporters. “We’ve got to do better, as a staff, as a team, and I’ve got to do better.”



Sanders was particularly sharp about his defense’s struggles against mobile quarterbacks. “We’re just not doing our jobs. It’s not like it’s a surprise what they’re going to do. We’ve got to do a better job of preparing these young men to do their jobs in front of the multitudes.”



The coach added that <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/colorado">Colorado</a> missed chances were not about schemes or scouting but about accountability. “They’re prepared, they’re studying film… It was a great scouting output for the staff, we’ve just got to step up. We’ve got to make the plays that were there. We had tremendous opportunities, we just didn’t.”

<h2>Sanders Sends Warning but Respects BYU</h2>



Even as he warned his own team to improve, Sanders gave credit to <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/byu">BYU</a> for how they performed. “Disciplined team, fundamentally sound team. They played their b—- off. Young quarterback is phenomenal. Proud of him. He made the plays that he was supposed to make to win the game.”



Sanders also praised BYU’s leadership and coaching. “Utmost respect for the coaching staff over there, especially Sitake and his wonderful father that I’ve had the pleasure to meet twice now. They did what they had to do.”



For Colorado, the focus quickly shifts to next week’s matchup against TCU. The Buffs edged the Horned Frogs 45-42 in 2023, but Sanders made it clear his team cannot afford the same lapses.

Coach Prime knows his team has much more to give — and that was evident in the first half, as the Buffaloes came out firing, looking to dominate their opponent from the opening snap. However, Sanders wasn’t pleased with how his squad closed out the game, suggesting they may have taken their foot off the gas down the stretch.

<h2>Deion also revealed another team called Shedeur</h2>



Deion said that the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/philadelphia-eagles" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Philadelphia Eagles</a> also inquired about Sanders prior to the NFL Draft. However, it would be a similar case to that of the Ravens. Jalen Hurts has guided this team to two Super Bowls, winning one of them. He is in the middle of his prime, a top-tier quarterback, and Sanders could not just go and take his place.

His son, Shedeur Sanders, is on the Cleveland Browns, but as a third-string quarterback. Appearing on a podcast, the father gave his son a piece of advice and a big-time prediction.

“Be patient and be ready,” Sanders said as an advice to <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/shedeur-sanders" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shedeur</a>. “I got a prediction, I ain’t telling nobody, I got a feeling of when it’s going to go down, but it’s going to go down this year.“ According to Deion, his son will have a shot at the starting sport this very season.



<h2>Shedeur has some mountains to climb</h2>



Right now, Shedeur is the third QB on the depth chart. The Browns’ starting QB is <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/joe-flacco" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Joe Flacco</a>, but then it’s fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel ahead of him. Hence, Shedeur has to earn the trust of head coach Kevin Stefanski to overlap not one but two quarterbacks on the roster.

Sanders had a very good preseason debut but the next appearances he had were very underwhelming. Plus, being as mediatic as he is, Shedeur is heavily scrutinized and always under the scope. When he plays well, people will overreact and when he plays bad, people will bury him.

<h2>The Browns do have a QB problem</h2>

However, the offense is as bad as an offense can get in the NFL. The team has scored 17 or fewer points in all three games this season. The mere fact that the record is 1-2 and not 0-3 speaks volumes of how good the defense is.



This can’t keep going, though. It’s not sustainable. If Deion Sanders is correct, sooner rather than later Stefanski will have to make decisions regarding who is under center. Following his dad’s advice, Shedeur just needs to be ready for when the opportunity presents.

“It wasn’t good. I’m at a loss for words,” the head coach firmly stated. “No one could have told me that it was gonna turn out like this.”
